Balanced Literacy

What does balanced literacy look like (especially in a kindergarten classroom)?
Balanced literacy includes reading and writing throughout the day through a few main components. The components and what they are called in my daily schedule are:
Reading Aloud (to children)
Shared Reading (with children/Poem of the Week)
Guided Reading (small groups/conferencing/Literacy Stations)
Independent Reading (DIRT)
Writing Aloud (author studies)
Shared Writing (with children/ILES-Individual Language Experience Stories)
Guided Writing (writing workshop/conferencing)
Independent Writing
I will go into more depth of each component in the following weeks. Keep an eye for blogs to come and how to help your child at school.

Loving the blog! It's so nice to know exactly how he is learning. It gives us plenty of conversation material with him! I know that he is LOVING school and enjoys the friends he has made. Thanks Mrs. Shepherd, Mrs. Smith & Ms. S!!!
